Fra Mauro, who spent most of his life in the monastery on San Michele in Isola in the Venetian lagoon, was occupied for a long time with his famous world map and in spite of the scarcity of documentation available to us regarding the method and duration of this enterprise, we can assume that the collection of geographical information represented in the drawing was completed towards the end of the 1440’s. It should be emphasised that one supposes a work of such complexity would necessarily be divided into two phases: an initial phase to gather geographical data, for their evaluation and organization, and a second phase for the realization of the drawing, positioning of place names, notes, decorative elements and so on.
