PETRARCH FISHERMAN OF LETTERS

Petrarch wanted to ensure the survival of his library. It was after all the most important in Italy at the time. He named the Republic as heir to his library, which would, on his death, be opened to the public. He was the first to dedicate himself with passion and foresight to the quest for manuscripts of ancient authors in the sleepy libraries of monasteries and chapter houses. He found classical works, sacred and profane texts and the final result was a harmonious and organic collection, the mirror of an ideal spiritual and cultural whole.
