SANSOVINO SENTENCED INSIDE THE LIBRARY

The construction of the building which was to house Cardinal Bessarione’s book collection and to become Venice’s public library, was begun by Jacopo Sansovino (Florence 1486- Venice 1570) in 1537. In December 1545, when the works were almost completed, much of the building collapsed and Sansovino was taken into custody. With the intervention of influential friends, including Titian, he was released from prison and had to pay for the reconstruction.
